Meeting to hear DOE soil plan

A public hearing is set here for 7 p.m. Jan. 20 on tentative state approval of a U.S. Department of Energy plan to dispose of contaminated soil and debris in a landfill at 5600 Hobbs Road, behind the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant.

The hearing will be in the Heath High School auditorium.

The materials contain trichloroethylene, or TCE, a now-banned cleaning solvent used at the plant for decades. Traces of TCE are in treated soil being removed from cleanup areas.

A state agreement lets DOE use the landfill to dispose of materials with no more than 6 parts per million of TCE. The tentative state approval, based on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidelines, increases the limit to 39.2 parts per million.

Documents are available at the Paducah Public Library or from Maria Wood in Frankfort at 502-564-6716, ext. 636; fax: 502-564-9232.
