Council OKs lawsuit to halt waste transport
As expected, the Las Vegas City Council unanimously authorized the filing of a lawsuit Wednesday to stop the transport of high-level nuclear waste through Las Vegas en route to Yucca Mountain, 100 miles northwest of the city.
The vote makes good on a promise made by Mayor Oscar Goodman at last month's State of the City address.
No timetable was set on when a lawsuit might be filed, or what legal strategies might be employed to stop the transport of waste to the facility, which is awaiting approval from Congress. But Goodman said the lawsuit may not have to wait for the president's signature on a bill authorizing waste transport.
Several lawsuits to halt the dump have been rejected by federal courts.
