COPELAND is preparing to host a European annual conference for countries with nuclear installations.

Council leader Robin Simpson and Coun Geoff Blackwell, who holds the cabinet post for development and environment, will soon travel to Manchester to meet their Spanish, Swedish and French counterparts to plan the conference which will be held next May. The venue is likely to be Summergrove.

Fergus McMorrow, Copeland's community regeneration director, told a recent Cabinet meeting: "Detailed plans for this important event are being worked on and funding discussed with the EEC and private sector sponsors.''

Councillors Simpson and Blackwell represent the UK on the new body, called the Group of European Municipalities with Nuclear Facilities and their Futures. The group aims to make sure it participates in nuclear discussions and European Union decisions and provides an information exchange forum.
