PRIMARY COOLANT LEAK AT MIHAMA-2 IN FUKUI

8 April 2000

There was primary coolant leakage at Mihama unit 2 reactor (PWR,
500MW) detected at around 10am yesterday (April 7), Japan Time
(+900).

The operator, Kansai Electric Power Company (KEPCO), has manually
shut down the reactor. At 8pm yesterday, the leakage of highly
radioactive light water was continuing.

According to the Mainichi newspaper report this morning (8 April), an
estimated amount of 400 litter of coolant water out of the chemical
and volume control system, which regulates the boron condensation in
the primary coolant, thus directly affecting the core reactivity. The
leakage seems to have occurred at a stainless tube, 60mm diameter and
9mm thick.

KEPCO claims no emission of abnormal radioactivity out of the reactor
containment building.
