Temporary nuke waste bill introduced
WASHINGTON, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Two congressmen have submitted a bill to place high-level nuclear waste at the Nevada Test Site. Reps. Fred Upton, R-Mich., and Edolphus Towns, D-N.Y., patterned their legislation after a measure passed by the House in 1997. The bill would designate the Test Site as a temporary holding station for 35,000 tons of nuclear waste until Yucca Mountain or another permanent location is opened. The Clinton administration opposes the temporary proposal and thwarted the previous measure.
