County Won't Try To Stop CP & L

(CHATHAM COUNTY) -- Chatham County commissioners have voted not to join three Orange County towns in condemning Carolina Power and Light's plan to store more high-level nuclear waste at its Shearon Harris plant. The utility company wants to open two more storage pools and continue bringing in spent fuel from its other plants. The ``News and Observer'' reports the county is trying to persuade the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to hold a hearing on the plan... and eight other local governments have endorsed that idea. This week's decision followed rumors that C-P-and-L has been dangling incentives in front of commissioners in an effort to buy their support.. but commissioners deny those claims.
