Kempthorne Threatens To Block Waste

Monday, March 01, 1999

(BOISE) -- Governor Dirk Kempthorne is warning the federal government that he will block any new shipments of nuclear waste into Idaho if other waste isn't shipped out. Kempthorne says the state's agreement with the federal government allows him to block a shipment of European spent fuel from entering the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Lab this summer. The state of New Mexico is blocking next month's opening of an underground nuclear storage dump where the radioactive waste from Idaho is eventually slated to go.
