(SAN FRANCISCO) -- A panel of U-S nuclear experts say there is disturbing evidence that organized crime may be getting into the nuclear game. At the State Of the World Forum's annual meeting in San Francisco, scholars said organized criminal syndicates such as the Italian Mafia could be starting to build a global distribution network for smuggled nuclear material from Russia. William Potter, director of the Center for Nonproliferation Studies in Monterey, says Russia's economic crisis has resulted in alarmingly lax controls over its estimated 30-thousand nuclear weapons and stockpiles of radioactive material. Potter called the situation ``desperate'' after returning from a tour of various Russian nuclear installations.
