Subject: Extension of Public Comment Period United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Public Affairs Washington, DC 20555 Phone 301-415-8200 Fax 301-415-2234 Internet:firstname.lastname@example.org No. 99-90 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Friday, April 30, 1999) NRC EXTENDS PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD FOR REGULATIONS LICENSING PROPOSED RADIOACTIVE WASTE REPOSITORY IN NEVADA The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is extending until June 30 the time available for the public to comment on a proposed rule regarding the proposed high-level radioactive waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. The comment period was to have ended on May 10. The agency received several requests for an extension of the comment period at public meetings held last month in Las Vegas and Beatty, Nevada. Commenters referred to the complex, technical nature of the proposed rule and the need to review other related documents, as justification for the extension. The proposed rule, published in the Federal Register on February 22, would add site-specific criteria for licensing the proposed geologic repository for spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive wastes at Yucca Mountain. Interested persons are invited to submit written comments to the Secretary, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001, Attention: Rulemakings and Adjudications Staff. Comments may also be submitted electronically via the NRC's interactive rulemaking website at http://www.nrc.gov/NRC/rule.html.
