Pit Nine Probing Begins
Friday, December 03, 1999
(IDAHO FALLS) -- What's buried in Pit Nine? Crews at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory are about to find out. They have inserted a probe tube into the one-acre buried waste pit. They used a sonic wave drill to sink the first of many probes into the pit to see what kinds of radioactive and toxic materials are there. Pit Nine is part of an 88-acre disposal site that was used until 1970. Former INEEL contractor Lockheed Martin provided no cleanup even though it got Millions of dollars from the Energy Department.
