Eureka County to hold nuke waste workshop
Saturday, November 27, 1999
Eureka County is planning to Dec. 2 workshop to help residents in northeast Nevada prepare for upcoming federal hearings on the Yucca Mountain dump plan.
The workshop will be held at the Crescent Valley Town Center and is designed to help residents in that area prepare for the Department of Energy's Yucca Mountain Draft Environmental Statement hearing Dec. 9 in Crescent Valley.
The reason Crescent Valley is scheduled for a federal DOE hearing is that the federal agency is considering a rail line from Beowawe through Crescent Valley to transport nuclear waste between power plants and defense facilities in the north and east to the Yucca Mountain site in southern Nevada.
Eureka County officials as well as environmental groups have expressed concerns about the dangers to the area's residents and environment caused by hauling dangerous waste through the Crescent Valley and the potential damage if there was an accident.
