DOE to Drill at Pit Nine
Friday, November 05, 1999
(IDAHO FALLS) -- The Department of Energy says there's less "than one chance in one million" that drilling into a buried pit of radioactive waste will set off an explosion or fire. By the end of the month DOE will start probing Pit Nine at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory. Some INEEL employees worried that sonic drilling could cause an explosion at the buried dump site containing barrels and other debris contaminated with plutonium. DOE needs to test Pit Nine so it can finally begin the long-delayed clean-up.
