Now is time to get EIS from Yucca Mountain

July 13, 1999

Now is the time to request a copy of the Department of Energy's draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository project, according to Leonard Fiorenzi of Eureka County's Yucca Mountain Information Office.

The draft Environmental Impact Statement which is scheduled to be released by DOE in late July, will detail the Department of energy's plans o construct a repository at Yucca Mountain.

The document is also expected to include rail, highway and intermodal transportation alternatives to get the waste from the nation's power plants and defense facilities to the proposed site. One proposed rail route alternative, known as the "Carlin Route," would be built from the Union Pacific tracks in Beowawe and run southwest through Crescent Valley into Grass Valley.

"This action could cause tremendous changed in the Beowawe Crescent Valley area," said Abby Johnson, Eureka County's nuclear waste advisory.

Interested people may request a copy of the entire draft EIS or just the summary document. According to DOE, the document will also be available to download from DOE's web: www.ymp.gov.

To request the EIS, call the Eureka County's Yucca Mountain Information Office at (775) 237-5372 or in Crescent Valley, contact the public works office at (775)468-0326. The County will forward requests to DOE. The document is also available from DOE's toll free information line at (800) 967-3477.

Information about the EIS process and the Yucca Mountain Project is also available on Eureka County's Yucca Mountain Website: www.yuccamountain.org.
