RADIOACTIVE SHIPMENT FROM MASSACHUSETTS OVERDUE IN MEXICO
Federal Express and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Radiation Control Program are searching high and low for a radioactive shipment that should have arrived in Mexico Saturday. On Friday, April 16, AEA Technology USA, Inc. of Burlington, Massachusetts shipped a device loaded with eight Irridium-192 sources totalling 866 curies by Federal Express to Vicont SA de CV, in Taluca, Mexico. The undamaged package has transport readings within authorized limits. As of Wednesday night the receiver had the shipping papers but not the container. AEA Technology and Fedex have launched a full scale search for the package. The Fedex hazardous material investigation team has conducted a physical search of depots in Boston, Memphis, Los Angeles and Mexico without success. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Department of Transportation National Response Center have been notified.
