Approximately 25 people, including representatives from the offices of Senator Dianne Feinstein, CA State Senate Cathie Wright, CA State Assembly Speaker proTempore Sheila Kuehl, the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), and the Committee to Bridge the Gap attended a public meeting in Simi Valley on the evening of March 8. Co-sponsored by DOE/OAK and Boeing North American Company's Rocketdyne Propulsion and Power segment, the purpose of the meeting was to provide advance notice of intent to submit a Part B application by June 1, 1999, to DTSC for the treatment and storage of mixed wastes at the Radioactive Materials Handling Facility (RMHF). The facility has been operating under a Part A interim status permit. It was stressed that this was not a proposal for a new facility and that no offsite waste would be brought in. Since the site has transuranic (TRU) waste, DOE is dependent upon the opening of WIPP to dispose of it. Comments from this meeting will be included as part of DOE and Rocketdyne's submittal to DTSC. The DTSC review will provide additional opportunities for public review and comment. The RMHF operates in support of the clean up and final closure of OAK's former Energy Technology Engineering Center scheduled for FY 2006. Members of the local media were also present.
