CONTAMINATED SOIL DISCOVERED DURING ROUTINE SURVEY -
HANFORD SITE, RICHLAND OPERATIONS OFFICE

On 03/01/99 a Health Physics Technician (HPT) was performing a
routine survey and found contamination in soil to the levels of
500,000 dpm per probe area beta-gamma and no alpha contamination was
detected. Approximately 1/2 lb. of material was removed from the
area and placed into the Radioactive Material Area. Based on the size and
shape of the contaminated area, the HPT speculated that the soil had
been contaminated by animal urine.
