DOE RELENTS ON LONGER DRAFT EIS COMMENT PERIOD

The U.S. Department of Energy, responding to pressure from Governor Guinn, Nevada's congressional delegation, public interest groups, affected local governments, and others, has agreed to lengthen the public comment period for the draft Yucca Mountain Enivironmental Impact Statement from 90 to 180 days. The comment period begins upon formal release of the draft EIS, which is expected to occur by the second week of August.

DOE had initially rejected calls for a longer comment period, siting schedule concerns. However, Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson intervened and personally ordered the additional time for public comment.
